Novels in English or French for grown-up readers
Here you can read about novels in English. If you want to comment or recommend a book, do it here: Bok-bubbla or at Kontakt (see the menu). I'll start with my own recommendations and continue with others'.
This week's recommendation
Thud! (and many books by ...)
Author: Terry Pratchett
Plot:
The plot in Thud! isn't really what is important, but in short it's about Sam Vines, commander of the Ankh-Morpoork City Watch and his struggles to prevent war between the dwarfs and the trolls of Ankh-Morpork.
The book is very funny, like all Pratchett's books (that I've read anyway). It is full of strange, stupid, clever, funny, selfish, strong, tiny and different characters, some are actually differently normal.
Pratchett uses metaphors like "stuck as a rock in a ceiling" and expressions like "The self esteem of a caterpillar", "alcohol didn't seem to go to her brain at all ... maybe it couldn't find it ..."
However I don't recommend you to read the book ... if you can find it as an audio book. Thud! for instance is performed (it doesn't say read on the box, and actually performed is a much more accurate word) by Stephen Briggs, who is very entertaining. All the characters get a different voice and many of them a different accents - it's a joy to listen to!
Run along and browse the nearest bookstore or library immediately!

Je reviens te chercher
Author: Guillaume Musso
Plot:
This is story about Ethan, Céline and Jessie. Mostly about Ethan and his struggle to, already rich and famous, find the love of his life and also save the daughter he didn't know he had. It's about love, life and death and about realizing what's really important in life.
This is a book that you don't want to put down. When you've begun - you want to keep reading 'till the end (which is a bad thing if you use it as a bedtime story ...).
If you (like me) are not very accustomed to reading in French this is a perfect book, you even forget that it is in French and just keep reading. Diffrent from many French authors (that I have come across at least) Musso writes novels where something actually happends without too much "fluff", which is a good thing! The Time Traveler's Wife
Author: Audrey Niffenegger
Plot:
This is a love story about Henry and Claire and there is something really unusual about their love. Henry has a genetic disorder that makes him incapable of staying in his own time. Sometimes without further ado (and without clothes) he finds himself in a completely different place and time, than where/when he was just a moment ago.
The first time Henry meets Claire, he is an adult and she is just a six year old girl.
This is an extremely romantic and fascinating novel, that I recommend to everyone who is a little bit open minded. As soon as I had finished reading the book I knew, that I would want to read it again.
OOOOO (5/5) (My daughter, 13, also read it and loved it!)
